Electronic Chart Display & Information Systems (ECDIS) Using IMO's performance standards and recognized by Transport Canada, the course introduces ECDIS: setting up and maintaining equipment & display; basic navigation functions; using ECDIS to set up and monitor a route and to ensure a safe navigational watch. Marine Basic First Aid & CPR
For those working in the marine, fishing, or passenger vessel industry, this two day course includes the latest First Aid and CPR guidelines and meets Transport Canada's standards for Marine Basic First Aid. You will develop the skills and knowledge needed to respond to cardiovascular emergencies and choking, airway, and breathing emergencies. Marine Emergency Duties MED A3: Small Non-pleasure Craft
A one-day, classroom session, this course is the most basic of the MED courses and is designed for crew members on fishing vessels operating not more than 20 miles offshore, and for crewmembers on passenger vessels with un-berthed accommodation only operating on minor waters (does not include BC Ferries). Where possible, students are encouraged to take the more advanced MED A1 or MED A2 which include practical, hands-on sessions.

Marine Emergency Duties MED A1: Basic Safety Course
Recommended for crew members on larger commercial vessels, this three-day Transport Canada course provides seafarers with an understanding of the hazards associated with the marine environment and helps them develop the skills required to cope with emergency situations. Topics include hazards and emergencies, emergency response, lifesaving appliances, and survival rescue with practical pool and fire-fighting days. Students require transportation to practical sessions, discussed at first class. Students receive a Transport Canada certificate upon successful completion.

Restricted Operator, Maritime Commercial (ROC-MC)
The Restricted Operator Certificate - Maritime Commercial (ROC-MC) is required for mariners serving on commercial vessels fitted with Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems (GMDSS). This four-day course is approved by Industry Canada and includes both theory and practical study. Class size is limited and early registration is recommended! Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP)
For operators of small commercial vessels, this Transport Canada course provides information on regulations, seamanship, marine weather, charts and navigation, collision regulations and small vessel stability. Please contact Transport Canada to confirm certificate requirements for your operation.

Simulated Electronic Navigation Limited (SEN L)
Required for Fishing Masters and officers of commercial vessels, this course provides a Simulated Electronic Navigation Certificate with an understanding of Collision Regulation applied to navigational watch using Radar. Topics include the fundamental principles of Radar, factors affecting Radar detection, plotting and charting practices; and collision avoidance and safety margins. Prerequisite: Fishing Master IV/ Certificate of Service with a knowledge of chart work. Marine Emergency Duties (MED) courses at Camosun College are authorized and approved by Transport Canada and all students successfully completing MED courses are issued a Transport Canada certificate. Level 3 is the most basic of courses, followed by Level A1, with Level A2 being the more advanced of the courses offered at Camosun. (Note that students completing MED A2 receive credit for A1 and A2). Marine Emergency Duties MED A2 (includes A1): Small Vessel Safety
Students completing this course receive credit for both A1 and A2 Levels. A four-day Transport Canada approved course is designed to provide skippers and other seafarers with various safety related skills associated with small commercial boat operation and ensuring the safety of passengers. You will increase your knowledge of hazards associated with the marine environment, develop skills to assist passengers to survive an emergency, and learn to maintain safety equipment and keep safety records. Includes pool and firefighting practical sessions. Students require transportation to practical sessions, discussed at first class. Students will receive a Transport Canada certificate upon successful completion.
