Harvested live from the pristine waters of British Columbia, Canada, this product has long been a favorite with Japanese consumers. Known in Japan as “Uni” this product is loaded with Omega three fatty acids. Today, Uni is now available live and fresh here in British Columbia thanks to the Pacific Urchin Harvesters Association.
The “Urchin Friday” program is designed to deliver live sea urchin to local restaurants and retail fish stores every Friday and the concept is “catching” on. Dockside sales are available to the public fresh off local vessels at both False Creek Fishermen’s Harbour and the Steveston Fish Sales Dock. The product is fished on Thursday and Friday and available live for distribution and dock sales that day and all week-end.
Sea Urchin is a very user friendly product, cracking and cleaning is easy. Experienced consumers of live urchins have their own way of handling the product for either cooking or eating raw. Have a look at the cleaning and preparation and storing segment on our DVD on this website (Marketing/ Video’s) to get an idea of what to do with your live urchins. Get in there and get at the roe. Urchins are basically full of what they eat, seaweed and kelp, both are high in omega three fatty acids and zinc.
Working with retailers to provide their customers with fresh urchins is the main goal of Urchin Friday. The Pacific Urchin Harvesters Assoc. believe that bringing in good quality product to local shops will build strong and loyal markets.
Local restaurants can benefit by using Sea Urchin as an appetizer or main menu item. Check out our recipe page (consumers/recipes) and see what local Chef’s are doing with this versatile and delicious product.
Each sea urchin is hand picked by divers. Pacific Urchin Harvesters Association works closely with the Dept. of Fisheries and provides an independent third party monitor. D. & D. Pacific weighs and records every sea urchin when they are landed. The sea urchin fisheries in B. C. are considered as one of the most sustainable in the world. Both have the green rating from Sea Choices and Ocean Wise.
Try fresh sea urchin (uni) – you will not be disappointed.
